Case studies

It is always exciting and satisfying to see a disused and abandoned Empty Home take shape into a beautiful, well-appointed home.

Blaenau Gwent

Property information

This area in Tredegar contained a high proportion of run down, neglected properties which were mainly privately owned. The privately rented properties were mostly derelict and vacant.

The Local Authority used Welsh Government's Vibrant and Viable Places funding to regenerate the area as a pilot project to educate and inform future ECO work.

During this time, other parties undertook internal refurbishment work to bring their empty properties back in use.

One particular 2-bed property had been empty for more than seven years and the owners were keen to engage with Empty Homes Wales to take advantage of the services on offer.

Partners involved

Outcome

With the help of United Welsh, the Local Authority were successful in obtaining funding for this project and arranged the refurbishment works with local contractor SMK Building and Maintenance Ltd.

When the refurbishment work finished, suitable tenants were found and the property now provides a lovely modern family home.

The owner entered into a 10 year lease agreement with United Welsh, which commenced August 2014.
